The Crash That Changed Everything
Cass was heading home on his motorcycle after a normal day at work when his life took a sudden, violent turn. A car pulled out in front of him at an intersection, and the impact was so severe that he was thrown 63 feet from the crash site. As he lay on the pavement, Cass knew immediately that the injury was catastrophic because he could feel that his back had snapped. Despite his fear of heights, the severity of his injuries meant he had to be airlifted by helicopter for emergency surgery.
“As soon as I hit this car, I mean I can just like… I can feel it. I mean it was almost like was in slow motion: as soon as I hit this vehicle I felt my back snap—like I could literally feel the pop.”
A Mother’s Desperate Race
Sherry, a middle school teacher for 37 years, received the call every parent dreads. She rushed toward the scene, not even stopping to change out of her work clothes. When she arrived and saw the mangled remains of the motorcycle and the car, she was convinced her son could not have survived the impact. Desperate to see him one last time before the helicopter took off, she navigated through traffic and around parked cars, focused entirely on reaching her child.
“One look at that motorcycle and that car and I just knew that he could not have survived that, and I wanted to be there to see him before they took off with him because I didn’t know if he would make it.”
Handcuffs and Heartbreak
The situation turned from tragic to terrifying when a sheriff’s car struck Sherry’s vehicle as she tried to get closer to the landing zone. Instead of receiving assistance, Sherry found herself staring at a gun pointed at her head. She was forcibly removed from her car, thrown to the ground, and placed in handcuffs. While her son was being flown to a hospital with a severed spinal cord, Sherry was taken to jail, where she spent the night in total local silence, not knowing if Cass was still alive. Though the initial felony charges were later dropped to a misdemeanor, the emotional scars of that night remain as the family now focuses on Cass’s long road to recovery.
“I realized that it was a policeman, a sheriff’s car, that had hit me and he is standing there with the gun at me and he is like ‘get out, get out, get out!’”
