From City Life to First-Time Farmers
Josh Clark and his family made the leap from city living in St. Albans to a 50-acre farm nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. With 15 acres of pasture and the rest wooded, they now tend cows and chickens, with plans to expand into sheep, goats, and crops. Despite having no prior farming experience, neighbors pitched in to help them get started, offering advice and even selling them livestock.
“Neither one of us were farmers. We’re winging it and learning as we go.”
The Allure and the Challenge of Farm Life
“It’s just death and life constantly over and over again.”
Managing a farm has its highs and lows. Between daily chores, feeding animals, and learning new skills like hoof care, Josh and his wife have embraced the hard work. They also have plans for a livestock guardian dog to protect their flock from local predators. Through it all, their family works together, from cutting grass to handling chores, enjoying the hands-on lifestyle that comes with rural living.
