On a scorching Wednesday in July 1984, the bustling McDonald’s on San Ysidro Boulevard—just two miles from the U.S.-Mexico border—was full of families grabbing lunch, employees running orders, and kids laughing over Happy Meals. In just 77 minutes, that scene transformed into the deadliest single-shooter massacre in U.S. history at the time.
By the time the last shots rang out, 21 people were dead. Nineteen more were injured. The shooter, James Oliver Huberty, had transformed a family restaurant into a war zone. And yet, despite its unimaginable scale, this mass shooting has largely faded from our national memory.
A Man Spiraling into Darkness
James Oliver Huberty wasn’t born a monster. He was a 41-year-old husband, father of two, former welder, and security guard. A man who had chased the American dream from Ohio to San Diego, only to find rejection, unemployment, and growing paranoia.
Living in the working-class neighborhood of San Ysidro, Huberty had recently been fired from a security job. His wife, Etna, later described him as becoming increasingly obsessed with violence—watching war movies, stockpiling weapons, and talking about the collapse of society. Neighbors would recall his aggressive behavior, and Etna admitted that he once held a gun to her head during an argument. His spiral was no secret.
On July 17, 1984, just one day before the massacre, Huberty told Etna he was “losing [his] mind.” He even called a mental health center seeking help, but because he sounded calm, the call was deemed non-urgent. To make matters worse, his name was misspelled in the system—Schuberty—so no follow-up was ever made. That night, he turned to his wife and uttered a sentence that should haunt anyone who hears it:
“I’m going hunting. Hunting for humans.”
77 Minutes of Terror
At 3:56 PM on July 18, Huberty walked into the McDonald’s on San Ysidro Boulevard armed with a 9mm Uzi carbine, a Browning pistol, a Winchester shotgun, and over 250 rounds of ammunition. He wore camouflage pants and a blank expression.
The massacre began with a misfire aimed at a 16-year-old employee. Within seconds, the first bullet struck 22-year-old assistant manager Neva Caine in the face. Panic erupted.
For the next hour and 17 minutes, Huberty stalked the restaurant, methodically firing at adults and children alike. He showed no mercy, shooting toddlers point-blank and chasing down those who tried to escape. His rage wasn’t directed at any one group—it was blind, total destruction.
Outside, police miscommunication and uncertainty delayed the response. The standoff only ended when a SWAT sniper fatally shot Huberty from a rooftop.
When the dust settled, the scene was unthinkable: blood, toys, food trays, shattered glass—and silence.
A Nation Forgets, But San Ysidro Cannot
The San Ysidro McDonald’s Massacre was the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in U.S. history at that time. And yet, just decades later, it’s barely mentioned in conversations about mass violence. Overshadowed by more recent tragedies, this horror has been pushed aside by history, even though it remains one of the most senseless and horrifying rampages ever recorded.
The McDonald’s where the shooting occurred was demolished and later replaced with a memorial and a satellite campus for Southwestern College. Survivors have carried the trauma for decades. Some became advocates for gun reform; others retreated from the public eye entirely.
It’s a grim story—one of mental illness ignored, systemic failure, and a man whose quiet warning became a massacre.
“He kissed her goodbye and walked out the door. Not to work. Not to war. To slaughter.”
