A Life Full of Light
Crystal is remembered by those who loved her as a “soft-hearted” and “good” person who was deeply rooted in the tight-knit community of McDowell County. She was the kind of person who took care of everything for her family, from planning birthday parties to grocery shopping for her relatives. Her sister, Erica, describes her as the central pillar of their family life, a woman who was always happy and constantly looking out for others. Even years after her passing, her presence is felt through her grandchildren, some of whom are described as “clones” of her.
“She was the backbone of our family. If I would have a birthday party for my child, I would show up and it would already be done. She had everything decorated. She was that one of the family.”
The Shadows and the Search
Despite her bright personality, the months leading up to Crystal’s death in August 2008 were filled with “weird” and escalating behavior from Michael Weisman. Family members recall instances of him stalking her, peeping through windows, and even breaking into her home to hide in a closet. On August 5th, Crystal decided she was finished with the relationship and wrote a breakup letter. The following day, she was heard for the last time during a phone call in which she was screaming for her phone to be returned. After four days of agonizing searching, her family eventually found her body in a creek near Gardener Road in Spanishburg.
“She has always told me, ‘Mom, Nette, Christina, if anything ever happens to me, you know Mike did it.’ You know he did it.”
The Long Road to a Day in Court
Though the murder happened in 2008, an arrest was not made until 2022. Since then, the case has been plagued by a series of continuances, leaving the family “spinning [their] wheels” as they wait for a trial to begin. Crystal’s mother, Jeanie, who is now 80 years old, has expressed a desperate plea to see justice served within her lifetime. The family remains hopeful that a jury will finally hear the evidence, including eyewitness accounts and phone records, to provide the finality they have sought for over fifteen years.
“I just want to see justice done before I leave this earth, and I’m 80 years old right now.”
