Growing Up With Ghosts
Rachel and Carl were not just looking for scares; they were practically born into the paranormal world. Rachel lived in a Victorian home as a child where she saw figures moving between rooms, while Carl spent three years living in a haunted fraternity house where he heard phantom children playing with rubber balls. For these investigators, the paranormal is not just a hobby; it is a reality they have lived with since they were kids. Even Sky has dealt with spirits “showing out” at home, including a ghost that decided to crash her daughter’s Harry Potter themed birthday party by tossing juice boxes and ripping down floating candles.
“I never liked going upstairs to bed by myself because every time I’d round the corner of the stairs there were these people going in and out of the rooms and I knew that they didn’t live with us.”
When Tech Meets the Great Beyond
The team uses a variety of tools like EMF meters and “EDI” an environmental detection instrument, to capture hard evidence. However, technology often fails when things get really spooky. Carl recalls a night in college when a fully charged camera battery drained to zero in less than a second the moment his foot hit the basement floor. To help spirits communicate without draining the investigators, Rachel even brings plasma balls to investigations so the entities can use that energy instead. Whether it is a full body apparition in a jumpsuit caught on film at an asylum or a mysterious “ghost cat” descending a staircase, the evidence they find is hard to debunk.
“The second my foot hit the basement, the camcorder cuts off—like it was so dead it wouldn’t turn back on. It just completely killed the battery in like point two seconds.”
The Heavy Toll of Being a Medium
Being an empath and a medium is about much more than just seeing shadows; for Rachel, it involves absorbing the energy of everyone around her, whether they are living or dead. She often hears spirits whispering in her ear and has even been told by entities that the closet in her bedroom is a portal that must remain open. While this work can be so taxing that it takes a week to recover, the team finds it rewarding to help the living find closure. Rachel recalls a powerful moment at the Litz Mansion where she was able to relay a message from a late wife to her grieving husband, helping him find peace in a moment of deep sadness.
“I absorb everybody’s energy whether you’re living or not living and it can be really taxing. It’s very tiring sometimes it takes me a week to recover when we do investigations but I also enjoy it because not only do I help the living, I often help the unliving.”
