Some moments change your life forever.
For Amber Kidd, that moment came when she realized her brother AJ Sloan’s disappearance was not going to be taken seriously unless someone forced it into the light.
“It was like a light bulb went off…you have the social media skills, you know what it takes to get stuff out into the open — you’ve got to be willing to do it. And from that moment on, I was like that’s it. I’m taking the gloves off. I’m done.”
In this emotional and urgent conversation, we sat down with Amber, who traveled from Charlottesville, Virginia, to share AJ’s story with us. AJ Sloan, 41, has been missing since November 26, 2024. His case has been labeled a missing person’s case with suspicious circumstances by the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department.
Amber’s devotion to her brother shines through every word she speaks. She described AJ as a “protector” — the kind of brother who shielded her from life’s ugliness, even when they were just kids growing up in West End Greenbrier County. Born just twenty days apart, they always joked that they were twins. “He made it normal,” Amber said, smiling through tears.
AJ loved football, four-wheelers, hunting, and fishing. He had a natural talent for pool, much like their father. But like too many others, AJ struggled with addiction — a battle that ultimately complicated his life and relationships in heartbreaking ways.
Despite the challenges, Amber never stopped trying to reach him. She recognized the signs of his spiral firsthand, having fought her own battle and celebrating nine years of sobriety this year. “The first thing they teach you in recovery is to help others,” Amber said. “And the fact that I couldn’t reach him broke every part of me.”
After AJ missed a crucial court date and failed to pick up groceries his family had prepared for him, his mother knew something was terribly wrong. A missing persons report was filed on December 4, 2024.
His last known location was Nancy Avenue in Rainelle, West Virginia — confirmed by his cell phone records, which stopped transmitting at 4:30 a.m. the day he disappeared.
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to AJ’s exact location. If you know anything, please reach out — no tip is too small. We will include all the contact information at the end of this post.
This story isn’t just about one man — it’s about how easily people who are struggling can be ignored, judged, or forgotten. But not here. Not in this community.
Amber’s bravery reminds us that we all have a role to play — that empathy, action, and persistence can make a difference.
AJ isn’t just a missing person. He’s a brother. A son. A protector. And he deserves to be found.
If you recognize AJ Sloan or have any information about his whereabouts, please contact the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department or message Creepalachia directly.
